craigslistThis weekend was full of Halloween tricks and treats and we thought it would be the perfect time to bring up ghosts – that is, ghosting on Craigslist. Ghosting is a term applied to Craigslist ads that appear to be posted but never show in the category pages. Craigslist will provide you a posting ID and a URL to view your post but no one else will ever be able to locate your listing because it doesn’t appear in the mix with all the other ads. Your post is essentially a ghost, unseen by the public.

So, why am I getting ghosted?

Craigslist is an online classifieds site and aims to keep it as simple as possible with independent posters submitting unique ads.  They want to provide value through the classified advertisements and keep junk postings and spammers off the site.  Let’s face it – there’s a reason why craigslist.org has a traffic rank  of #10 in the United States and #34 worldwide and it’s because they strictly enforce their guidelines.

If you are posting too many ads in a short amount of time, re-posting the same ad multiple times, or not posting a unique enough ad you could be ghosted by Craigslist.  The exact reason isn’t always obvious and can take some trail & error testing before you figure out why your ads aren’t being seen.

How do I avoid being ghosted?

There are a couple Craigslist best practice rules to follow in order to avoid being ghosted. If you suspect you’re already being ghosted by Craigslist don’t worry – we have a few tips & tricks to show to get you back in good standing.  To learn more about ghosting on Craiglsist, see our article in the LotVantage Help Desk.
